WATER CONSERVATION

Because Every Drop Counts

At Total Irrigation Ltd, we understand the need for water conservation and the preservation of the environment. We take pride in our commitment to conserve water - one of nature's most valuable resources. We continually examine and explore new ways of saving water utilising new and innovative products.

Around 200 million litres of water is piped to homes, schools and businesses throughout the Wellington region daily. That rises to as much as 300 million litres in hot weather. It's an awful lot of water - the equivalent of more than 11,000 milk tankers. The more water we can leave in our waterways by using less, the healthier the ecosystem. This also means there is less chance of tighter water restrictions in the future.

Water Meter Installation

On the 10th November 2010 new Resource Management Regulations came into effect.

The regulations have been established as a tool to provide better planning, monitoring and management of New Zealand's water sources.Specialist knowlege may be needed to ensure that the system is able to be verified as meeting the level of accuracy required by the regulations.

We are an Irrigation New Zealand accredited water meter service and installation provider, and provide and install a wide range of water meters to suit your requirements.

Key Water Conservation Projects

Waitangi Park, Wellington-A unique project using recycled stream water as the main source of irrigation water. Incorporated into the design and made feature of the park itself, was the stream and wetland. Sourced underground, the water flows through the parks wetland and stream which acts as a natural filter before it returns to sea. Prior to sea, we draw from the stream and pump it through a UV chamber to treat any harmful bacteria that may be present. Recycling water this way has proven to be a successful method of irrigating the park without the need for a town water supply.

Bore Water Supply- An existing bore was used to water an entire retirement village consisting of over 80 houses. Due to the size of the property it was too costly to use town water so a decision to use the bore was made.

Although the bore had a very high iron content we were able to succesfully remove and control the iron to a managable level. This was done by pumping the water through a water softening filtration process via a 25,000 litre tank before pumping it throughout the village.

Frequency of Watering

Watering when your plants need moisture is the key to water conservation. The ideal situation is to water the root zone of your plants and no more. By leaving the soil to dry out inbetween watering, you'll encourage deep root growth and healthy plants. The frequency of watering depends on a number of factors including climate, selected plants, soil texture, water pressure and season.

As a general rule, flowers and vegetables need short, frequent watering. Trees, shrubs and lawns require a deeper soaking but less often.

Being Water Wise

By also following these household & garden tips below, you can help make a difference to your region's water supply and the sources it comes from:

We recommend that you install a tap timer or an automatic controller (a forgotten sprinkler can waste a huge amount of water).
Using a drip irrigation system can also conserve water as these are close to the ground level, avoiding wind drift and loss through evaporation.
If watering by hand, choose water efficient devices such as triggers that stop water flows as you move between plant beds, as well as soak hoses.
Use mulch. As well as slowing weed growth, it reduces evaporation by up to 70% and improves the soil's ability to hold water. Soil must be moist before applying mulch.

Controllers and Rainchecks

There is a wide range of automatic controllers available to save you time, money and water. We have selected two models that are the best value for money and which offer superior operating features and reliability.

Residential: TORO DDC Controller - available as a 4,6 or 8 station unit

These controllers all provide the following minimum features:

  • 3 independent programmes
  • 3 start times per programme
  • 1-240 minute run times per station
  • battery backup (in case of power failure)
  • multiple watering day options

No Power - No Problem!

The Toro DDC range of controller now comes as a battery-powered unit. These controllers operate on only 2 x 9v batteries with full programming capability as the powered (240v) version.

Eliminate Unnecessary Watering

Talk to us about installing a raincheck device. This is a fantastic way of eliminating unnecessary watering on your existing irrigation system.

A raincheck will automatically interrupt the watering cycle when its raining - and does not change the irrigation programme. The system will return to normal watering once your property and raincheck have dried out. In most situations, it's a very easy addition to your system for around $165 + gst.

The Ultimate in Water Storage

We stock the most technically advanced water tanks suitable for agricultural, commercial and domestic applications. They’re ideal for catching and storing rainwater for irrigation purposes and can also be used in the case of an emergency.

These tanks are designed for strength, practicality and durability. They come in a variety of sizes and colours:

  • UV stabilised for NZ conditions
  • Storage capacity from 75 gallons (295 litres) to 5550 gallons (25,210 litres)
  • Will not corrode
  • Resistant to algae growth
  • Transportable
  • Lightweight, easy to handle
  • Easy to plumb and connect.
  • Extensively developed and tested
  • 20 year warranty

Should you want the water for potable uses (drinking, cooking etc,) we recommend the addition of UV filtration, and you might want to consider installing a Tank Snake filter system. This catches and removes dirt, grit, leaves and debris before entering your tank helping to prevent chemical residue and sludge build-up. These can fit onto any tank size.

Lowara Pumps:  A world leader in providing excellence for any water pump requirement. Manufacturers of all types of pump including self-priming, centrifugal, end suction, vertical multistage, submersible and more.

Lowara Pressure Systems:   Deliver quiet, efficient and powerful performance to meet any domestic water requirement. They are supplied ready-assembled, tested and ready to go.

There are two main options for domestic use:

  • Press control: a complete self-contained pump control device. It will automatically cut in and keep your pump running which reduces pressure fluctuations that can occur with a standard pressure switch system. It will also automatically stop your pump in run-dry situations.
  • Pressure switch and tank: simple and reliable, this is the most common method for controlling a pressure pump system. The tank holds the reserve of water and when that reserve has been used, the switch detects the pressure drop and starts the pump.

Davey Water Tanks

Potable Water

If correctly filtered, rainwater can be stored in potable rainwater tanks and used for all potable water needs. A potable water tank can be installed above or below ground safely.

  • A filter is essential in order to maintain the health of the stored water. As rainwater flows into the tank, it will carry with it debris from the roof and guttering. The filter cleanses the water of these impurities before it enters the tank.
  • A UV filter will help deactivate any live micro-organisms that could also be present in the harvested water rendering them harmless. There is no chemical residue in the process which means your water will taste as good as it should be naturally!

Rain Bank - The ultimate water saving device!

Designed to manage your water supply between tank and town main! If you have a tank for the collection of rainfall for domestic water use, installing a 'rain bank' will automatically switch between the water tank and your normal house water main as required. For example, if the tank runs low, it will automatically switch to town main and top the tank up. It will only allow a preset amount each time so that your tank is able to fill again when it rains.
